Cindy Sherman’s work she would photograph herself as different characters. Sherman’s Untitled Film Stills was the first breakthrough that made her popular. According to Eva Respini a MoMa photographer states that Cindy’s success was because “[She] was one of the first to explore the idea of the malleability or fluidity of identity.” Sherman’s work became very influential especially towards younger artists.
The inspiration for my self-portrait was Cindy Sherman’s Untitled Film Stills. In my self-portrait, I depicted myself as a Hollywood star from the 50s. I wore a fur coat with a pair of sassy sunglasses and a knitted scarf wrapped around my head to give a luxurious feel. I did this similar to Cindy Sherman’s movie still where she portrays herself as a cliche movie character. She gives a vintage vibe by transforming herself by wearing makeup and vintage clothing as well as.
This week I had fun transforming myself into a Hollywood star in my backyard. It was fun to not take a picture of myself but rather a character with a narrative. I am now more appreciative of Sherman’s work because from reading the articles and creating my own work inspired by her I learned how she paved the way for many artist’s careers as wells as for people to explore their own identities.
