Easy- Josh Reed

"A now notorious first fall into alienation, habituating people to abstract the world into printed words, is supposed to have engendered that surplus of Faustian energy and psychic damage needed to build modern, inorganic societies" (Sontag).

When I first looked at this quote, I was in utter confusion. I saw a lot of different words that I had to look up and I didn't think tied into each other at all. It wasn't until I realized that this sentence was a metaphor for social media. The first part, "A now notorious first fall into alienation, habituating people to abstract the world into printed words, explains how we as a society are now so detached from one another, that people are used to the idea of communicating through words and pictures while not communicating at all, really. The the second part of the sentence which continues, "is supposed to have engendered that surplus of Faustian energy and psychic damage needed to build modern, inorganic societies", elucidates that the whole point of social media is to dead the idea of being divided and bring everyone from everywhere together. It has become quite toxic to our society and at this point, this kind of behavior is the norm.

We are so close to our reflection yet so far. It shows either what we want to see or the opposite of what we want to see. What's in between the glass that separates us? Just like social media, we are just a click away from each other but are we just a click away from the real you?
