The basis of Cindy Sherman's self portraits tend to try to inspire the inner version of yourself to come out. In the self portrait I chose; Untitled A, Sherman wants to change one character into another. Sherman was an inspiration in those terms. Her work often revolves around role playing and changing identities. As the readings suggest, she gives the guidelines and sets parameters to identify yourself through your self portraits. As an artist, she wants you to truly find yourself and establish your true personality in these works.
As said in the article; “Cindy Sherman opened a lot of the doors. She was the trendsetter in terms of distorted characters within self-portraiture. Originally painters painted self-portraits, and then she kind of blew it open with photographic portraiture, and now there are all these avenues younger artists are taking, which would not have been so easy without her work.”(Hoban). Sherman became an inspiration for different generations. Finding herself allows for younger people to embellish themselves in their own work.
In my self portrait, I decided to put my feelings for the day into the self portrait. As someone who is shy and reserved I decided to put those feelings into the self portrait. I am someone who tries to hide and not be noticed. However, Sherman's work inspires change and bringing out the inner you. My shy and hidden nature holds me back but my true feelings of stress and anxiety can be seen. I consider myself to be an over thinker and over analytical and in my self portrait you can see someone who thinks and has a working mind. In the work I chose, Sherman's inner mood and feelings are exposed as explained by her smile and face. She is changing into a more confident person who wants to show herself off. She loves the ever-changing face and tone of a person, and the change is what inspires her to take these self portraits. The inspiration of this painting led to me changing my hair to a more messy look and bring out my inner rebel while also keeping my shy and reserved look.
