"Filtered Vision" |
This selfie was inspired by the Susan Sontag excerpt "On Photography." I chose the quote "This very insatiability of the photographing eye changes the terms of confinement in the cave, our world." The idea behind this photo came from the different subjective views each mind holds and then uses to perceive art and photography. The cave Sontag mentions is referring to Platos Allegory of the Cave, with two groups one who stays within the cave and are comfortable with what they know and the other which exits the cave to learn about what else is out there. She calls this cave "our world," which makes me think she is explaining the difference of what an eye can view and create in a camera lens compared to the restricted views we see day to day. This made me want to play off the idea of filters, to depict the variety of ways you can view the same thing but see it entirely differently. This is due to every person living different lives and being exposed to different media, knowledge, opinions, etc. Also because of the mention of the photographing eye, I composed this to just view my eyes so it feels like a person could either be looking into the photographers eyes or the perspective of what the photographer is seeing. On both sides, there is some sort of bias and subjective views that decide how we view the world.
