History - Final Project Presentation

Within this project I wanted to focus on the things that I choose to consume within social media that helped built my identity. Compare how how my midterm built upon my family on how being born in this specific family made me who I am today. The change was how did I change my identity socially without the interaction of my family or peers at the time.

So within my final project the subject is within the aspect of Anime/ Games more specifically, how Anime and Gaming first inspired me to develop my interest in art more than just stick figure houses and coloring pages of a cute coloring book.  At a very early age, I've always been interested in Art. It was something that I loved doing growing and knew straight on that I wanted to do this for the rest of life. However, I didn't know what exactly in Art I wanted to do or focus on, until I got exposed to drawing existing characters which later on inspired me to creating my own character. At the age of 11-12 I got introduced to the Sonic the Hedgehog series when I got my 1st computer. The first thing i did was go to youtube and searching sonic amv videos which later spotted sonic fan character speed paint videos and from there it was history. Knowing that people created their own character, which were cute and filled with personality, I too wanted to touch upon that which lead to the creation of Ray The Hedgehog.  Ray was the 1st character I ever created when I was 12 and really was the 1st step in expanding not only my creative mind but also my social interactions and pool of interests. Without her I don't think I would had meet so many amazing and talent people that im still friends with today, I wouldn't had learned how to properly talk to others or know what I wanted to do exactly in my life with Art. I wouldn't had learned to properly start drawing, brain storming ideas, learning art programs or compositions, as well as learn how to character designs for not only in the Sonic Series, but also Fandom characters from existing anime series, or even Original characters!

So for my Digital Illustration I decided to use Kehinde Willey as my sort of inspiration. The aspect that I got inspired from within his compositions was the way he designed backgrounds, specifically the backgrounds using floral motifs or the use of detailed lines and colors. So within my Illustration I drew Ray casually leading against a frame of a picture I drew of her when I was 12. To help show case how much she grown not only in design choices but also how I grew as an artist within the last 8 years. With the background having flowers that are commonly seen in animes such as roses, sunflowers, and daisies. Mainly shown in slice of life / drama shonen animes. While trying to incorporate lines to show movement just like in Kehinde's backgrounds.

How media and images influence identity and self presentation based through the stories the media is trying to present us with. The stories that the media of anime or gaming try to tell us can affect me and multiple people emotionally and mentally. It's a story that connects experiences and it's something many people can relate. By seeing the protagonist struggle within their own lives helps reflects the things we are experiencing now or in the past.

What I think this piece conveys to the audience is self growth.
The spectacle is the main principle of mass media, it is something that people consume as well as something that people can put in public in which it is viewed, learned or judged.( both positively and negativity). As stated by John Berger's book "Ways of Seeing" that " Images were first made to conjure up the appearances of something that was absent." as well as "Seeing comes before words. The child looks and recognizes before it can speak.. It is seeing which establishes our place in the surrounding world; we explain that world with words, but words can never undo the fact that we are surrounded by it." Another author named Guy Debord wrote the "Society of the Spectacle" in which he states "The spectacle presents itself simultaneously as society itself, as a part of society, and as a means of unification. As a part of society, it is ostensibly the focal point of all vision and all consciousness. But due to the very fact that this sector is separate, it is in reality the domain of delusion and false consciousness: the unification it achieves is nothing but an official language of universal separation."
