ANA MENDIETA
Ana Mendieta was a very talented Cuban American Artists , sculpture , painter and video artist who was best known for her earth body artwork. Mendieta was very significant due to her contributions to the body art movement.
Ana mendieta was born in cuba but just at the age of 12 she had to live cuba along with her sister to escape the violence of the cuban government and Fideil Castro regime . she moved to the United States as a refugee and resided in refugee camps as well as catholic charities organizations. After being in foster care for years Mendieta reunited with her family somewhere in the late 60s, then later on attended Iowa university where she obtained her BA and an MA in painting.
Some of the main themes depicted in Mendieta's works are feminism, violence, sense of belonging and displacement, nature, purity , life and death. "My art is grounded in the belief of one universal energy which runs through everything: from insect to man, from man to spectre, from spectre to plant from plant to galaxy. My works are the irrigation veins of this universal fluid. Through them ascend the ancestral sap, the original beliefs, the primordial accumulations, the unconscious thoughts that animate the world"
As we learn more about Mendieta we realize that her life is embedded into her works, she create the iconic “piece rape scene” just after a nursing student from the school she was currently attending got murdered. She used her body and organic materials to show purity and spirituality, she used blood to show the pain and hurt she has been through and her abstract ways of taking her photos depicting her art as a way of showing her displacement. Menditas artworks are usually crying out and telling a story, exposes her closed up emotions of her past life.
