Self Portrait

Jasmin Erichsen
Art of Self Invention: Self Portrait

In my self portrait I used drawings and images to convey what important aspects of my life. I include things like family, school work, and sports. I believe these things tremendously effect my self identity. This project looks very chaotic and unorganized but everything holds meaning. I have ADHD so its hard for me to focus on one thing at a time. The artist that I’ve connected with and influenced my composition the most is Jean Basquiat. His works look confusing and overworked but has a purpose which I like. I also lightly mimicked Basiquiats drawing style. Basquiat once said , “I don't think about art when I'm working. I try to think about life”. By using drawings and photographs I wanted the viewers to see that I have a lot going on in my life. I used colors that clashed with one another. Theres always multiple things going through my head; from sports, school and many other things. I represented my personal life by using drawing and collaging. I used drawing because I find it relaxing and it helps me focus. My family and friends have shaped me into the person I am today, that is why I included them in my composition, they are very important to me. I also included sports. Playing sports my whole life has taught me important life lessons like how to adapt to new environments, being consistent, respect, being a team player and more. I also included a computer, I am studying to be a graphic designer and the computer is one of the main tools I use. This project shows that I am a daughter, sister, athlete, student and young adult.
